Bear Hunting
Bear Hunting Details:
Starting on Sundays in May and early June, we offer 6 day/5 night bear hunts. Shortly after leaving Homer, stretches of shoreline can be glassed for bears. This rarely-seen area of the Peninsula borders the Kenai Fjords National Park and has spectacular scenery. This time of year, bears are concentrated below the snow line as that is where the food is. Most bears are taken at or near the beach, keeping packing and climbing to a minimum! The 18 to 20 hours of daylight allow for plenty of fantastic morning, afternoon, and evening hunting. We also spend a lot of time glassing tidal flats from shore. This is the most effective way to hunt these bears. It just doesn't get any better! Your trip includes lodging on the boat, all snacks and food, and skiff transportation to and from the Outer Limits. As defined by Alaska Fish and Game we are not a guide service. We are your transport vessel. This means you will get to plan your own hunt. We recommend our guests arrive in Homer on Saturday as the vessel departs the harbor early Sunday morning. If you have any questions about this, give us a call!
------> You do not have to be a bear hunter to go on this trip! Many of our trips consist of men or women who are interested in fishing, taking wildlife photographs, beachcombing, and other such adventures. Give us a call or send us an email! We would love to discuss your options. We return to Homer Friday afternoon, so guests should plan on staying the night in Homer to allow for bear hide sealing and fish freezing, etc.
Disclaimer: These hunts are self-guided, and we do not allow proxy hunting per Alaska Fish and Game Laws. Hunters are required by law to take care of the cape and meat themselves. For more information, give us a call!
2024 Rate: $4200 pp plus tax (8 hunters max per trip; as we do not mix groups on these trips, we require a minimum group of 6 hunters to reserve a week with the expectation that the remaining seats will be filled or paid for by May 1, 2024).
M/V Valiant Maid
The Boat: The M/V Valiant Maid, our 85 foot steel hull vessel, is as rugged as the state she works in. Its equipped with 4 private cabins, individual bathrooms, relax/entertainment room, showers, 110v power, TV/DVD, stereo, state of the art electronics, freezer, and many other features (sorry helicopter not included). After a long day of hunting, there is nothing nicer than coming back to a warm boat and a hot meal! The full-size kitchen allows our staff to produce some fantastic food. Check out our YouTube series Field to Fork for a peek at these meals. This vessel is manned by two Coast Guard licensed masters and a deckhand with years of experience in the Kachemak Bay and Kodiak area. We pride ourselves on creating extraordinary adventures for our customers.
Mix it up with Fishing:
Fishing is a fantastic way to add variety to your bear hunting adventure! All that you need is a fishing license. The Valiant Maid is outfitted with equipment for many different types of fishing such as halibut, salmon, rockfish, or lingcod. If you wish to retain fish, we recommend doing so toward the end of your trip to send you home with the freshest possible catch. Fish processing, packaging, and shipping are available in Homer. The easiest and most cost-effective method is to bring the packaged boxes of fish on your return flight as luggage.
